Trial Hole Case Study

This case study shows an example of the cradle to grave process already carried out on numerous projects for various clients. Conroy Group can carry out as little or as much of the following process depending on the client’s requirements.

The feasibility study was carried out on an area called Moxley within Wolverhampton, Staffordshire for Enterprise working on behalf of Severn Trent Water.

Trail holes were identified and pre sited to identify with the aim to identify service density and hence water main renewal techniques for a scheme totalling 14km.

Feasibility Process

  • Extent of works is identified by the client (i.e. new main size requirement).
  • Supervisor visits the site and plots locations of trail holes in order to optimise information and ensure engineering difficulties are identified and mitigated before commencement of works.
  • Program is compiled (see example PDF) and issued to the client with commencement dates and identified engineering difficulties to ensure accurate noticing to local councils and transparency of works.
  • Works commence with on average ten to fifteen trial holes being completed per day (depending on ground conditions/engineering difficulties) with full chapter 8 and traffic management utilised as required.
  • Once excavated services are colour sprayed to highlight their existence, dimensions are measured and recorded on a detailed trail hole log. (see example report) The log is then issued to the client or the Conroy Group design team for interpretation.
  • Once images and information are captured trial holes are backfilled and reinstated – often 90% of excavations are completed within three hours of excavating. Closing dimensions are then forwarded to the client for noticing purposes.
  • Information is collated and a design technique proposal issued to the client for their perusal.
